It’s National Preparedness Month, the month when we like to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time. This year’s theme is “emergency preparedness for older adults”. We know older adults can face greater risks when it comes to emergencies, especially if they live alone, are low-income, or have a disability. We wanted to share a few ways you can help elderly family members, friends, or neighbors navigate emergencies from how to prepare before to recovering after.

We always encourage you to check in with neighbors before an event, such as severe weather to share safety tips or get your homes prepared to face the elements. Older adults may need extra help de-cluttering drains or gutters and bringing in outside furniture. The same rings true after an emergency, especially with older adults. Do they need help cleaning up, do they have enough food and water for the next few days, or do they need help refilling medication or getting to the store?

Do mom, dad, or grandparents live in your household? Don’t forget them in your family emergency plan! As you tailor your plans and supplies to your specific daily living needs and responsibilities think about how you will include everyone in your household like seniors who may have extra needs. Some needs to consider are several day supply of prescription medicines, extra eyeglasses, hearing aids, and batteries or batteries for electric scooters.

Older adults, create a support network with family or neighbors who can assist you during an emergency. Make sure at least one person in your support network has an extra key to your home and knows where you keep your emergency supplies. Inform them to use lifesaving equipment or how to administer medicine. Fill out a health information form to keep track of blood type, health conditions, and medications. Keep a copy within easy access so that you or a medical professional can refer to it in case an emergency happens.

Signing up for ReadyPhiladelphia, the City’s emergency notification system, is one of the ways you can stay in the know and prepared. Tell your neighbors or help them sign up. Notifications can be customized and received through text, email, or voicemail. Text READYPHILA to 888-777 or visit phila.gov/ready to sign up.

Well-connected communities are more resilient. You can make a difference by helping your friends and neighbors get prepared for emergencies this Preparedness Month and all year long!
